Having established successful programs in New South Wales and Queensland, innovative disability support provider Johnny H has expanded into the Australian Capital Territory.

Established in 2019, Johnny H offers a range of support programs out of Penrith, NSW, servicing the Nepean & Blue Mountains region.

The company’s headquarters are based in Queensland’s Gold Coast, where Johnny H offers a group program and one-to-one support for a broad range of clients.

Last month Johnny H acquired Skipper Care, an NDIS-accredited support provider focused on in-home care and community access for up to 170 clients per month.

Managing Director Scott Hirst said Skipper Care’s values and approach align well with that of Johnny H, which espouses a ‘Disability Done Differently’ ethos.

“We prefer not to define clients by their disability, but rather support them to live full and independent lives – to do more, be more and see more,” said Mr Hirst.

“The founders of Skipper Care have done a wonderful job building a loyal client base through trust and a genuine desire to improve people’s lives – that fits well with our ethos.”

Business as Usual

Skipper Care was established in 2016 and operates out of Mitchell, around 20 minutes north of Canberra’s city centre, and services the wider Canberra region.

Mr Hirst said it would be business as usual for Skipper Care clients and staff, whose valued team numbers around 90 administration and support workers.

“We’re getting to know the team and our clients, with services continuing exactly as they have been,” said Mr Hirst.

“The current offering is one-to-one, and we will take some time to understand whether the needs here extend to supported small group activities as we run other states.”

Johnny H Programs and Services

The Johnny H Nepean chapter offers group programs, School Leaver Employment Supports, and a day program for late teens and young adults with mild to moderate intellectual disabilities.

Group programs include regular social activities from the dedicated ‘Johnny’s Place’ centre, day excursions in and around Sydney, short interstate trips, and global travel.

In May, two separate groups travelled with Johnny H to Singapore, spending seven days exploring the city including Universal Studios, Singapore Flyer, Singapore Zoo and the Night Safari, the famous Merlion fountain, and Sentosa Island Cable car.
