Learn and develop new skills within a small supportive group on this Independent Living Experience with Johnny H. **PLEASE NOTE THIS IS A MIXED GENDER LIVING EXPERIENCE**

This is a mixed-gender Independent Living Experience (ILE). There will be a small group of male clients and a small group of female clients staying in shared accommodation. Rooms will be allocated based on gender. One male staff member and one female staff member will be onsite providing support. This ILE has a ratio of 1:4 support and takes place over a long weekend – incurring public holiday rates on Monday the 27th of April – this is included in the advertised NDIS cost.

An Independent Living Experience involves a short trip away within a small group where we build the skills, confidence and motivation needed to be self-sufficient in our daily lives. Over the 4 days away over the Anzac Day Long Weekend, our small group will work through a checklist of activities and tasks designed to build independence within a safe and encouraging environment.

Day 1 – Grocery Shopping and Cooking Skills
Participants will begin the program by planning simple & healthy meals together, creating a shopping list, and visiting the supermarket to purchase ingredients. They will then work as a group to prepare and cook the meal. This activity supports the development of practical life skills such as meal planning, safe food handling, teamwork, and following instructions. It also promotes independence, confidence in the kitchen, and an understanding of nutrition and making healthier food choices.

Day 2 – Travel Training
Participants will take part in a guided travel training experience, catching the train to a chosen location. During this activity, the group will learn how to read transport timetables, purchase or use travel cards, navigate stations, and practise safe travel behaviours in the community. The benefits of this activity include building confidence in using public transport, increasing independence, and improving community access skills.

Day 3 – Daily Living Skills
The group will discuss the importance of maintaining a clean and organised home environment. Participants will then put these skills into practice by completing everyday household tasks such as washing clothes, doing dishes, and vacuuming. This activity helps build responsibility, routine, and pride in maintaining personal living spaces.

In the afternoon, participants will engage in fun group activities that focus on communication, teamwork, and social interaction, supporting the development of confidence and positive peer relationships. In the evening, the group will go out for dinner together. This provides an opportunity for participants to practise social and community skills such as ordering food, communicating with staff, budgeting for meals, and engaging in appropriate conversation in a public setting.

Day 4 – Mock Budget Shopping Experience
Participants will take part in a mock budgeting activity where they create a list of items they want and need while working within a set budget. The group will then visit the shops to compare prices and assess whether their chosen items fit within their budget. This immersive, hands-on learning experience helps participants develop money management, decision-making, and prioritisation skills. Items may be purchased if the participant wishes, but spending money is not required, as the focus is on learning how to make informed financial choices and understand the value of money.

Focus areas include, but are not limited to:

  • Time management.
  • Diet and Nutrition.
  • Personal Care.
  • Money Management.
  • Meal Preparation.
  • Communication.
  • Decisions and Choices.
  • Daily Navigation.

Spaces are limited to four spots for each gender to allow the group leader to provide personalised care and attention to each person and the group as a whole.

In a nutshell:

  • 4 days, 3 nights.
  • Location will be given to those that book in for this experience.
  • Small group of 4 people plus same gendered support person.
