What to Expect
In our Johnny H Life Skills Day Program our day is split into two: capacity-building activities in the morning and social inclusion/community in the afternoon.
The day includes morning and afternoon tea as well as a weekly menu which is organised by the staff but prepared by the course participants (where suitable) as part of their personal development.
Morning Activity
On Monday mornings, participants will engage in work experience at the Raiders Club in Belconnen, focusing on setting up the bistro and restaurant for the day’s service. This activity provides hands-on experience in a professional environment, where participants will learn and practice essential skills required for hospitality and customer service roles.
Practical Skill Development: Participants will gain valuable hands-on experience in various tasks such as arranging tables, setting up dining areas, and preparing service stations. This practical knowledge is essential for those aspiring to work in the hospitality industry and helps build a solid foundation of job-related skills.
Enhanced Employability: By participating in work experience, individuals can develop a range of employable skills, including teamwork, communication, time management, and attention to detail. These skills are highly valued by employers and can increase participants’ chances of securing future employment.
Confidence and Independence: Engaging in real-world work scenarios helps build confidence and a sense of achievement. As participants successfully complete their tasks and receive positive feedback, their self-esteem and confidence in their abilities will grow, fostering greater independence.
Social Interaction: Working at the Raiders Club provides an excellent opportunity for participants to interact with colleagues, supervisors, and customers. These interactions help improve social skills, build relationships, and encourage a sense of community and belonging.
Understanding Professional Standards: Participants will learn about the professional standards and expectations within a hospitality setting, including hygiene practices, customer service excellence, and teamwork. This understanding is crucial for maintaining high-quality service and can be applied in various job roles.
Routine and Structure: Participating in this regular Monday morning activity introduces participants to a consistent routine, which can be beneficial for individuals who thrive on structure. This routine helps in developing time management skills and understanding the importance of punctuality and responsibility.
Real-World Application of Classroom Learning: This work experience allows participants to apply theoretical knowledge gained in the classroom to a practical setting. By seeing the relevance of their learning in a real-world context, participants can better understand and retain important concepts and skills.
Personal Fulfillment: Contributing to the smooth operation of the bistro and restaurant and seeing the immediate results of their work can provide a sense of personal fulfillment and satisfaction. Knowing they are making a meaningful contribution can enhance overall well-being and motivation.
Career Exploration: This activity offers participants a glimpse into the hospitality industry, helping them explore potential career paths. Experiencing different roles within the restaurant setup can inform their future career choices and aspirations.
Afternoon Activity
In the afternoon on Mondays we go to Flip Out! which provides an exhilarating way to improve physical fitness, coordination, and social interaction through fun and engaging trampoline activities. We return to Johnny’s Place to focus on independent living skills and practical DIY skills.
We do our best to minimise any changes to impact but plans may be forced to change due to external staffing, school holiday programming and adverse weather. For those not wanting to join in on either activity supports can be arranged within Johnny’s Place, however, these may impact the supervision ratio, and in turn the cost.
