What to Expect

In our Johnny H Life Skills Day Program our day is split into two: capacity-building activities in the morning and social inclusion/community in the afternoon.

The day includes morning and afternoon tea as well as a weekly menu which is organised by the staff but prepared by the course participants (where suitable) as part of their personal development.

Morning Activity

On Tuesday mornings, participants join the Grind to Ground crew at CIT Bruce, engaging in a variety of gardening and sustainability activities such as mixing soil, bagging compost, watering plants, and general gardening tasks.

Skill Development: Participants gain hands-on experience in gardening techniques and sustainability practices, enhancing their practical knowledge and abilities.

Physical Exercise: Gardening provides moderate physical activity, promoting health and well-being through movement and outdoor engagement.

Environmental Awareness: Learning about sustainable practices fosters an understanding of environmental stewardship and the importance of eco-friendly habits.

Teamwork: Working collaboratively with the Grind to Ground crew encourages teamwork, communication, and cooperation among participants.

Routine and Structure: Regular participation in gardening activities establishes a consistent routine, helping participants develop time management and organisational skills.

Sensory Engagement: Gardening engages multiple senses through touch, sight, smell, and sometimes taste, which can be particularly beneficial for individuals with sensory processing needs.

Mental Wellbeing: Spending time in nature and engaging in gardening can reduce stress, improve mood, and enhance overall mental health.

Responsibility: Taking care of plants and participating in sustainability projects teaches responsibility and the importance of nurturing living things.

Social Interaction: The group setting provides opportunities for social interaction, fostering friendships and a sense of community.

Achievement and Confidence: Successfully growing plants and contributing to sustainability efforts boosts self-esteem and confidence, providing a sense of accomplishment.

Afternoon Activity

In the afternoon, we walk to Hybrid Gym for a group fitness session with PT Clint, then return to Johnny’s Place to explore health and wellbeing and engage in creative activities.

We do our best to minimise any changes to impact but plans may be forced to change due to external staffing, school holiday programming and adverse weather. For those not wanting to join in on either activity supports can be arranged within Johnnys Place, however, these may impact the supervision ratio, and in turn the cost.

Pricing & Inclusions

The participant price covers the cost of food/drinks as outlined in the activity description.

The advertised price is based on a ratio of 1:3 and may change based on the final group size and ratios.

The NDIS price includes support and return transport from Johnnys Place.

Bookings can be made at any time during the term.

Please refer to our Cancellation Policy prior to booking.
