What to Expect
Welcome to Fridays in our Johnny H Life Skills Day Program. Our day is split into two: capacity-building activities in the morning and social inclusion/community in the afternoon. The day includes morning and afternoon tea as well as a weekly menu which is organised by the staff but prepared by the course participants (where suitable) as part of their personal development. Our Term 1 program runs for 12 weeks.
Morning Activity
Our mornings will focus on building the skills necessary for developing and maintaining positive friendships. Over the term, each day we will focus on a specific topic to ensure clients gain both understanding and practical experience, including:
My Peer Groups: Explores the dynamics of peer relationships and the importance of positive group interactions.
Making Friends: Provides guidance on how to approach and build friendships in different social settings.
Similarities: Encourages recognising shared interests and values, fostering deeper connections with others.
Differences: Focuses on understanding and appreciating the diverse qualities that make each person unique.
Qualities of a Good Friend: Identifies key traits that make for supportive, caring, and trustworthy friendships.
Personal Space: Teaches the importance of respecting physical boundaries in friendships and other relationships.
Appropriate and Inappropriate Behaviour: Differentiates between behaviours that strengthen friendships and those that may harm them.
A Positive Role Model: Encourages clients to embody positive qualities and behaviours that influence and inspire others in a friendship context.
Afternoon Activity
On Friday afternoons, we head out for a practical shopping experience. Participants develop essential life skills like budgeting, comparing prices, and confidently navigating grocery stores. This activity fosters independence and prepares clients for everyday tasks in a supportive environment.
We do our best to minimise any changes but plans may be forced to change due to school holiday programming and adverse weather.
