What to Expect

In our Johnny H Life Skills Day Program our day is split into two: capacity-building activities in the morning and social inclusion/community in the afternoon.

The day includes morning and afternoon tea as well as a weekly menu which is organised by the staff but prepared by the course participants (where suitable) as part of their personal development.

Morning Activity

On Thursday mornings, participants will engage in Communication sessions focused on building essential verbal and non-verbal communication skills. These sessions are designed to improve participants’ ability to express themselves clearly and confidently in both personal and professional settings.

Week-by-Week Focus:

  • Week 1: Introduction to Communication – Understanding basic communication concepts and the importance of effective communication.
  • Week 2: Verbal and Non-Verbal Communication – Exploring tone of voice, body language, and facial expressions.
  • Week 3: Active Listening – Developing active listening skills and responding appropriately in conversations.
  • Week 4: Expressing Opinions – Learning how to share thoughts and ideas respectfully.
  • Week 5: Asking Questions – Practicing how to ask open and closed questions effectively.
  • Week 6: Workplace Communication – Understanding formal and informal communication in a workplace setting.
  • Week 7: Communication Challenges – Overcoming communication barriers and misunderstandings.
  • Week 8: Conflict Resolution – Learning how to manage disagreements and resolve conflicts.
  • Week 9: Building Conversations – Developing small talk skills and maintaining engaging conversations.
  • Week 10: Social Cues and Etiquette – Recognising and responding to social cues appropriately.
  • Week 11: Group Communication – Participating in group discussions and collaborative tasks.
  • Week 12: Review and Reflection – Reflecting on progress and applying communication skills in real-life situations.

Skill Development: Participants will enhance their speaking, listening, and social interaction skills through practical activities and role-playing exercises.

Confidence and Independence: Improved communication skills foster greater self-confidence and independence in social and professional environments.

Routine and Structure: Weekly sessions provide consistent opportunities to practice and refine communication skills.

Afternoon Activity

In the afternoon on Thursdays, participants head out to Jump Swim in Fyshwick for a fun and engaging swim lesson. These sessions help participants stay active, improve physical fitness, and build confidence in the water. After returning to Johnny’s Place for afternoon tea, participants continue their learning with Money Management lessons and mindfulness practices to support financial literacy and emotional wellbeing.

We do our best to minimise any changes to impact but plans may be forced to change due to external staffing, school holiday programming, and adverse weather. For those not wanting to join in on either activity, supports can be arranged within Johnny’s Place; however, these may impact the supervision ratio, and in turn, the cost.

Pricing & Inclusions

The participant price covers the cost of food/drinks as outlined in the activity description.

The advertised price is based on a ratio of 1:3 and may change based on the final group size and ratios.

The NDIS price includes support and return transport from Johnnys Place.

Bookings can be made at any time during the term.

Please refer to our Cancellation Policy prior to booking.
